Prompt: “With eyes closed”
Danny Jordan, Pinja Hänninen

Walked past Helsinki Cathedral yesterday and above the entrance there was the eye of providence. It got me thinking about the eye: it has such a profound meaning in many religions and cultures and it’s seen as a representation of scrutiny, a way the Divine looks upon the mortals. Today as I got the prompt, it was clear that I wanted to play with the idea of the all-seeing eye closing. Falling asleep perhaps. Who is the one watching in the meanwhile?

I wanted to break expectations but then did the basic thing of painting a statue with eyes it’s closed with my eyes closed! I thought a lot about the divinity of closing your eyes. How we close our eyes when we dream, kiss, laugh, cry, orgasm. How we close our eyes in excitement, anticipation and fear. I thought about how I would flinch as a kid playing sports never able to keep my eyes on the ball. I also thought of all the great art created by visual impaired people. I wanted to try to capture these ideas for myself, creating something tactilely with smudges and finger prints. But also something that makes a viewer shut their eyes (I’ve included a video of me dropping the head on the camera to try to mimic those videos of baseball flying right at the camera)
