Prompt: “In reverse”
Elizabeth Hopkins, J.V.

Despite being sick on my March Ensemble day for the 2nd year in a row, I decided I wanted to sing. I just received the files for my friend’s new “wine glass organ” which turned out to be perfect for accompanying a voice not at full strength.
I wanted to add calm artwork and improvised something that looks like a window. Incidentally, the friend who made the organ specializes in window art, and I’m usually the one who builds instruments, so in that sense, too, the process ended up being “in reverse”.

“This prompt made me think about the indexical nature of photography, a medium that documents the traces of things via light. I wanted to create an image that is a trace of motion in reverse. What would that look like? Funny enough, I misplaced my memory card while I was trying to make this, so I had to use my phone instead. I’d originally planned to make a long exposure to show movement in reverse, but instead I made a digital collage of a burst of 11 photos shot in quick succession. I further pushed the piece by layering these images on top of each other unevenly in varying opacities. The result I think captures some of the disorientation of moving backwards through space (or time).”
