I felt highly resistant to this prompt at first… It reminded me of stone-cold walls and people, and also phlegm.
Then I started to think about a cross-cultural study on temperament. Infants’ cortisol levels were measured and compared to their outward expression of distress while receiving a vaccine… In some cultures, little ones appeared to be seemingly phlegmatic, yet had pronounced cortisol levels… In comparison to others who were highly expressive yet had lower cortisol levels (Lewis et al., 1993).
Maybe a phlegmatic appearance is at times a mask, worn by the most expressive individuals. So this is a depiction of that dichotomy: between two people and within oneself.
