Prompt: “Checkers”

Monika Wilczynska

I’m currently on tour in the USA and I was running out of time to complete this year’s prompt after a hectic day. I thought about giving up as it was 11PM already, we’d just arrived at our hotel in DC and everyone was incredibly tired. I looked around half-defeated… and there it was. The checkered floor of a typical american diner. I couldn’t believe it and yet there was nothing more apt than this serendipitous background. Art, very much like life, is meant to surprise us and give us hope when we think there is none left. It’s meant to illuminate our darkest moments, give us back to ourselves and make us believe in a better tomorrow. Like a checkered floor that arrives a few minutes before midnight, I hope that life bestows surprising and needed gifts upon all of you, especially in times when you expect them the least. Love always, Monika

My practice is currently very intuitive (=all over the place), but I wanted to use the promt to push myself a little bit, creating constraints for the shapes. I used a reference photo of my partner floating in a pool, and just focused on one square at a time.
