Prompt: “Hiraeth”

“First thinking about this prompt, I couldn't help but focus on my recent move from the east coast to the west coast. Creating a collage of photographs I've taken in Maine and Connecticut (my two homes before moving), overlaying them with scenes from California, and turning them into some sort of memento of my time and friendships there seemed to fit the meaning of the word. Apollo is one of my favorite albums by Brian Eno and when thinking of the name for this image "Always Returning" stood out to me. Being homesick is a given when you move to the opposite coast, but I feel less of a longing to go back and find myself experiencing a heavy nostalgia for my old home. Combining photos of my friends with wildflowers, riding dirtbikes, swimming, camping, and sunsets from both coasts, created an experience for me that was like mapping out the past two years of my life.”

“When I received the prompt I had no idea what Hiraeth means. it sounded like the name of a planet in a 50s sci-fi book and rather than finding out what the word means I just went with this association. After I finished the piece and looked up the meaning of the word I figured “Hey maybe these space-faring people are experiencing hiraeth to get back to their home planet.”
