Prompt: “Borrowed texture”
Amanda Slamm, MaryAnn Anderson
MaryAnn Anderson
“Maybe it is age or recent close calls the prompt “Borrowed Textures” fed immediately into borrowed time and how we are all on borrowed time never really knowing when the final expiration will come. Texture is created through how I live my life and all the experiences that make it up. Since I work primarily with thread and fabric I had to limit myself to a specific amount of time so I didn’t get to much into creating texture through stitch.”

“My sister and I have a small company that makes kitchen utensils. We often have seconds - pieces that aren’t going to be usable for cooking. One of the most time consuming objects we make are wooden spoons. They are one off, individual and require a lot of hand work. So I tend to save flawed ones that are partly finished - unusable. I love the individual forms of spoons.
So I took two spoons - a cherry and a black walnut and finished them in a non-foodsafe manner. My ‘borrowed texture’ is the satiny silvery black almost metallic surface created by graphite. One of my favorite. Mixed with pigment and beewax, heated, applied to the spoons which were in turn heated, buffed and then yet more graphite added and buffed.”
