Prompt: “Make it oblique”
Kiana Maria Senke
“When given the prompt “Make it oblique” I thought more literal of the definition at first, then with sometime I realized most of my work I would say is oblique. Each piece is about very specific experiences I’ve had throughout my life that have impacted me in one way or another. I don’t give direct stories behind each piece to the viewers, and instead I prefer them to construct their own narratives. Recently, I had my first solo show and I actually gave some insight behind certain pieces. Once viewers saw the piece, they then were offered the choice to scan a QR code to see what it was actually about. Many people told me what their first thoughts were and then were surprised what the work was actually about. I find it fascinating that everyone can see the same exact thing but be affected in all different ways. One might see an image of child bouncing a ball thinking the child is happy to be outside and that they are playing, but then another person might see the same image and be brought back to a moment that maybe their parents were fighting and that they were told to go outside waiting for the argument to be over, counting how many times the ball is bounced this time causing them to see that in the image instead.
The phrases I use; “Do you see it too?” and “What happens now” I feel are very open ended questions. If I was to ask someone the question, “do you see it too?” without being direct I wouldn’t be able to have a clear guess to what their answer would be. Making both the question and the answer not clear to either person. I would love to know what others think the questions are about.”
