Prompt: “1-mile radius”

“Having broken my leg has limited me to the very small radius that is our block. This inspired a felt embroidery treasure map of the walk I can do with my dog, Brutus, but the beads represent the opposite of riches. It is the state you find yourself in when battling seasonal and situational depression.”

“I loved this prompt and admittedly approached it quite literally. I studied maps of where I live, nestled between the Kennebec and Sebasticook rivers, and considered the wildlife that thrives in these waters and wetlands. This habitat is home to countless creatures, including the American toad depicted here, who I often encounter in my driveway eating ants. As I reflected on place, I also thought about why humans, too, are drawn to rivers. My house is marked by the spiral red dot on the map, a small point in this vast and vibrant ecosystem. I feel incredibly lucky to be surrounded by these waterways and grateful to live at the top of a hill, just beyond the floodplain’s reach.”
