Prompt: “Palimpsest”

3. Palimpsest - a very old text or document in which writing has been removed and covered or replaced by new writing, creating new meaning.

4. Palimpsest - an altered memory gaining an infinite value in hindsight.

5. Palimpsest - what I mean when I say I cannot write that letter. 

6. Palimpsest - something that has a new layer, aspect or appearance that builds on its past and allows us to see or perceive parts of this past.

7. Palimpsest - in medicine, a term used to describe total or partial memory loss due to alcohol intoxication.

8. Mind-altering substances of all kinds are a palimpsest, as they allow us to see and create new meaning within ourselves. 

9. Not all scars are visible. Those that are should be honoured for they’re the reminder that we’re still here, despite it all. 

10. Palimpsest - a human being in their everlasting complexity.

“I had to research the word Palimpsest as I’ve never come across it before. And what a delightful surprise it was - infinite layers of meaning and possible interpretation. For me, the year 2023 has so far represented life-altering loss and painful endings, therefore I chose to create 10 pieces of art that all deal with grief visually and verbally. They are all palimpsests by nature. Each picture can be interpreted in a myriad of ways and if you know me personally, you can unlock additional meanings that are inaccessible to a casual on-looker. In that sense, your own mind becomes a palimpsest thanks to the way it interacts with the art. I have used a mix of real and imagined definitions of the word as titles for each piece. Palimpsest is an onion.”

JUTTA JOKINEN

“I saw a reel of this woman in ig who made a video of ”all of her past lifes”. It was a slideshow of her, in various phases and situations she had gone through. Today, the 2nd of march is my dear mama’s birthday. I started to think about her life and imagined how many times she, and all of us have to reinvent ourselves, adapt, change. Erase, and write again.”
